Job Search FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

Should I use a one page or a two page resume?

One-page resumes are most appropriate for recent graduates. If you’ve been working for a few years, it’s time to convert to a two-page document. Using a single page as an experienced professional can make you appear more junior and can reduce your application success (since you can’t fit enough content and keywords to generate interest).

How can I get my resume through ATS?

Applicant Tracking Systems primarily parse and track applicant data for the company. Most organizations do not rely solely on their ATS for screening applicants in or out. However, it’s still important to consider ATS-compatibility because hiring managers and Recruiters can search their ATS for specific skills or experience. If your resume hasn’t parsed correctly, you could miss out on an opportunity. We recommend leveraging tools like SkillSyncer and Jobscan to help with resume tailoring and keyword optimization.

What format of resume should I use?

Reverse chronological is the most preferred resume format by Recruiters and hiring managers. The functional format can raise red flags, since this is often used by applicants who lack experience or who have a scattered work history. A curriculum vitae format should be used if you are in academia, research or certain healthcare positions. Many international professionals use a CV format as well. You can learn more about resume format options and their efficacy here.

Should my resume be comprised of bullets or paragraphs?

Most screeners prefer a combination of paragraphs and bullets. We recommend providing a concise role description (that conveys the scope of your position) in paragraph form followed by a list of no more than 5 bulleted accomplishment statements. You can learn more about why this combination works well here.

Is it a good idea to purchase a resume template?

Most of the templates found online have been developed by graphic designers. While they are visually appealing, they are not necessarily ATS-friendly and most do not provide adequate space to include necessary content. Recruiters and hiring managers also loathe the subjective skill scales that many of these templates include, so you are starting off on a bad foot and wasting valuable resume space when using one of these options. There are quality resume templates available here and on Job Search Journey. These products have been developed by professional Resume Writers who understand how resumes are read and processed.

When I submit my resume should it be in .txt, .pdf or .doc format?

PDF will be the most consistent across screens and retains your visual design. However, many ATS parse Word documents better than a PDF. If you are sending your resume directly to a person via email, it’s usually best to attach it as a PDF. If you are uploading your resume into an ATS (online at the company’s career site), then it’s typically best to use a Word document. Search firms also prefer that you send your resume as a Word document, so they can anonymize and/or edit the information as they need to. (You need to decide if you are comfortable with them doing so.)
